A brief New Year's Day session wrapped up year-end business and authorized a commemorative artwork marking three milestone anniversaries.
Wyckoff's Township Committee convened a rare New Year's Day session Thursday morning, gathering at Memorial Town Hall to complete a slate of housekeeping resolutions that had been carried over from the December 16th regular meeting.
The so-called sine die meeting — Latin for 'without day,' signifying the formal close of business — lasted roughly fifteen minutes and drew only the five committee members.[1] Mayor Roger Lane presided alongside members May Bogdansky, Rudolph Boonstra, Peter Melchione, and James Schappert.
Among the items approved on the consent agenda was a contract for the design and creation of a commemorative sculpture honoring three landmark occasions[2]: the Township of Wyckoff's 100th anniversary, the United States semi-quincentennial, and the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The sculpture commission falls under the heading of 'extraordinary, unspecified services,' the standard designation for creative work not subject to competitive bidding under New Jersey law.
The committee also approved an authorization for Wyckoff to participate in the Arrive Together program through a memorandum of understanding with Comprehensive Behavioral Healthcare, Inc.[3] The statewide initiative pairs law enforcement officers with licensed mental health co-responders to handle calls involving individuals in psychiatric crisis — an approach credited in other jurisdictions with reducing arrests and emergency room visits.
'The intention is to make sure that when someone is in a mental health emergency, they get a clinician, not just a squad car,' one official noted during the brief session.
Other resolutions included routine budget transfers, the appointment of Thomas A. Hillman as a trustee of the Zabriskie House, authorization of vouchers and payment of outstanding bills, acceptance of the police chief's annual report, approval of 2026 towing licenses, and a shared service agreement with the Wyckoff Free Public Library for qualified purchasing agent services.
A motion to release certain closed session minutes passed 4-1, with Committeeman Schappert abstaining. He did not state the reason for his abstention on the record.
The Township Committee's next regular meeting is scheduled for January 21st at 7 p.m. in Memorial Town Hall.
