Why Wyckoff Holds Two Services on Sept. 11

This year marks 25 years since Sept. 11, 2001. Here's why our town gathers to remember it.

On Sept. 11, 2001 -- 25 years ago this year -- something very sad happened in our country. Terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York City and other places, and thousands of people died. Eleven people who were killed that day are remembered on a memorial here in Wyckoff.[7]

One of them was Dana Hannon. He was a captain in the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department, and he was also a full-time firefighter in New York City. He was one of the firefighters who went to the towers to help, and he died there. He was 29 years old.[4][8]

This year, Wyckoff is holding two services to remember. In the morning, at 8:45, there's a ceremony at Community Park.[1] That evening, at 6 o'clock, the Wyckoff Fire Department holds its own service at the memorial outside the firehouse behind Town Hall[10], followed by a gathering afterward. The fire department says all residents are welcome at the evening service.[2][3][5]

That memorial has a bronze statue of a kneeling firefighter, a stone carved with Dana's own fire gear, and a pool of water with an eternal flame.[6]

The morning ceremony is in Community Park, and that is where the town's own memorial is: an oval stone circle with a bench in the middle and a flagpole at one end. Eleven granite posts stand around the edge of the circle. At the bottom of the flagpole is a big piece of granite with eleven names carved into it, and the words "Never Far From Home and Forever in Our Hearts."[7][9] A small plaque on the wall says the town rededicated the memorial on the 20th anniversary, in 2021.
